Herbal Support for Anxious Young People - An Educational Guide for Parents
Introduction
Childhood anxiety is a common concern that many parents face. There are some herbs with calming properties that might offer support for mild anxiety in children. Here's a guide to child-friendly herbs that are sometimes used to alleviate anxiety. Remember, every child is different, so it's important to monitory the use and effectiveness of any herbs.
Child-Friendly Herbs for Anxiety:
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla):
Benefits: Chamomile is known for its calming and soothing properties.
Forms: Chamomile tea or tincture.
Dosage: 200-500mg daily - varying results, individual-based results
Considerations: Start with a weak tea and observe your child's reaction.
Drug interactions: will weaken the effectiveness of aspirin.
Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis):
Benefits: Lemon balm promotes relaxation and calmness.
Forms: Lemon balm tea or tincture.
Dosage: 100-500mg daily - varying results, individual-based results
Note: Lemon balm has a pleasant taste that many children find appealing.
Drug interactions: do not take with other medications, prescription or over the counter that cause drowsiness, sedatives, or thyroid medication
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia):
Benefits: Lavender is associated with a soothing aroma that can create a calming atmosphere.
Side effects: constipation, diarrhea, and headache
Forms: Lavender essential oil in a diffuser.
Caution: Use products specifically formulated for children and dilute essential oils properly.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis):
Benefits: Valerian root may help with anxiety and sleep.
Forms: Valerian capsules, tinctures, or teas.
Dosage: 300-600mg before bed
Side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, and vivid dreams
Interactions: medications that cause sedation
Note: Valerian has a strong odor and taste that some children might find unappealing.
Drug interactions: do not take with Benadryl (diphenhydramine), clonazepam, gabapentin, hydroxyzine
Safety Precautions
Start with small amounts and observe for any adverse reactions. Be aware of potential interactions with medications. Choose high-quality, organic herbs when possible.
